We were in the territory of #Capurganá ending a year of extreme productivity. Neither the pandemic nor the strikes were obstacles to contribute to the care of our planet.

This last visit of the year 2021 to the territory of Capurganá was very profitable because the ministry of the environment @minambientecol , the ministry of housing @minvivienda and the superintendence, with whom we visited the open-pit landfill, and the collection center, which are on the verge of collapse as almost all dumps of the Pacific , Atlantic, and the Colombian Caribbean.

Through environmental education and socialization programs, we must achieve that people become more empathetic and coherent with the environment where they live.

We hope that these ties and attention of the ministries to the territory, provide the necessary support to these communities that need it so much! Meanwhile, Ecopazifico will continue to manage with sponsors, allies and friends, the resources that can contribute to improving the recycling systems of the community and mitigate the arrival of waste to the landfill, which should become a sanitary landfill only for sanitary waste as its name suggests.

The real environmental heroes of Capurganá are the workers of the community council’s sanitation company: #Jacasep Thanks to their hard work in Capurganá there has not been an environmental catastrophe.

To celebrate Capurganá station #4 , the #Formidbales of Ecopazifico went to Sapzurro where their friends from @casamolahostel , to join forces and clean the beaches of the paradisiacal Cabo Tiburón.

Exaggerated amounts of micro plastics, bottles, and flip flops make the beauty of this paradise is interrupted by great frustration.

We collected: 38.27 kgs.

✨PET: 8.61 kgs.

✨Glass: 18.57 kgs

✨Rigid plastic: 6.09 kgs

✨Lightweight plastic: 4.0 Kgs

✨Metal: 1 kgs

We hope that soon we will be able to evacuate everything that is accumulated in the collection center and that both Bahía Aguacate and Sapzurro can stop burning their waste and that which arrives from the sea, in addition to income generation.

This fourth recycling station in Capurganá was built with 600 kg of post-consumer plastic by our friends from @ecoazulco, and transported from Cartagena to the territory by our dear @armadacolombia.

The infographic of this station can be found at the back of station #1 in the field. This one shares with us how to give management to the 3 different groups of waste generated in the area:

✨Recyclables

✨Organic

✨Sanitary or unusable waste

and how we can manage them to mitigate our environmental impact on the territory.

We invite you to watch on our Youtube channel 4 educational videos we made with the beautiful voice of @margaritamariaortega where we explain this system, the 3 steps of the ideal tourist, and the 3 steps to live in a clean community.

We thank @cocacacolacol and #fundacioncocacola for their support of this project. And to all our Formidables and allies

To inaugurate station #4 of Punta Arena on the island of Tierra, Beach Rangers Rocio and Ana Rosa from the @guardia_ambiental_colombia of Punta Arena, visited house by house inviting neighbors, family, and friends of the community, to get to know the new recycling station and make good use of it.

The theme of this socialization was to emphasize the practice of composting in the community. In it we prioritized native restaurants and hotels located in the sector of the station, among them @hotelrestaurantearrecife, @portobluemoon, @miramira_beach_hotel received us in 5 houses of the neighbors, we clarified doubts and shared some routines that already demonstrate a beginning of the correct disposal of animal waste. In addition, we identified that despite the fact that some of them already recycle plastic and cans, they mix the rest of the waste due to lack of knowledge, so the topic was reinforced with the hotels and in one of them with visitors and guests.

Part of this socialization exercise was the process of creating a blue crab, a species that abounds on the island, with caps collected by our allied foundation @amigosdelmar, and the support of the wonderful Brayan @descafeinad.o Valery @valerin98 and Diana’s daughter from @fundacion_bahia.

You can see this beautiful crab when you visit the Punta Arena community, along with the Hawksbill turtle by Diana Gomez @arteterapiamar, the parrot fish by Maria Antonia @mariantoniart and the sea horse by @marion.ve

We are very happy to have the environmental guard as an ally and our Guardaplayas firm with the environmental education of this territory.

To celebrate Punta Arena community recycling station #4 , we synchronized the beach cleanup with the full moon day.

Volunteers from @fundacion_bahia, @amigosdelmar, and @namastebeachclub, visited us to walk the beaches and trails and collect the waste that should not be in these areas, if not in the recycling station, in the collection center of #asocomangle , in @ecoazulco becoming plastic wood, or in some recycling factory in Colombia.

In this clean-up, we noticed that there was a lot of sachet packaging, especially candy and water bags.

After the day we celebrated in the facilities of the eco-hotel @namastebeachclub, to the rhythm of Afro-house, with @djmontiel.em and @elduardolopez, yoga classes by @pranapana, and ended the night with songs by @rodrigomancera and @johannamarin and then a beautiful cocoa ceremony with @pilotodrone, and a concert of Tibetan bowls with @micheff.g , @ginafegali, and @healandtravel.

We also showcased the crab created by Maria Antonia @mariantoniart , Brayan @descafeinad.o , Valery @valerin98 and Diana’s daughter from @fundacion_bahia

In Punta Arena the beaches are getting cleaner and people are putting the stations to very good use. That makes us very happy 😍😍😍.

Punta Arena already has its fourth recycling station #4 💪🥳.

This beautiful station was made with 600 kilos of recycled plastic wood by our friends from @ecoazulco , you can find it on the beach next to @portobluemoon restaurant on the pirate street!

At this station we remind locals how to compost step by step.

In communities like punta arena and remote and coastal places in Colombia , most people have a garden and patio where they can put all the organic waste they generate; fruit, vegetable and egg shells, coffee grounds, and also dry leaves and sticks, ash, sawdust, and even cardboard.

Just create a hole under a tree and mix your organic waste with a shovel once a week.

It is very easy to take care of the planet, we just need to change our habits and think about the future of the next generations.

More and more Formidables are joining these initiatives! 😍😍😍

Thanks to all the volunteers and also thanks always to our allies, for all these actions that fill our souls with joy and motivation to continue caring for our planet. @cocacacolacol

To celebrate recycling station #3 installed on Capurganá beach, Rommy Schreiber from @eco_pazifico and Ilana Levy from @caliclown, visited the territory to take a tour of the establishments near the beach, and see how their recycling habits were with this new station on the beach.

Although many of them separate their trash, they are still getting used to the fact that the white bag is for recyclables and the black bag for ordinary.
In Capurganá a lot of cardboard comes out, it is very bulky and is sold at a very low cost in the city of turbo. In places like Bahía aguacate and Sapzurro, we see that it is better to use cardboard for composting than to accumulate it.

Many establishments give their organic waste to the town’s pigs, something that makes it much easier not to contribute to Capurganá’s open-pit landfill that is on the verge of collapse.

Ilana Levy @ilanadecolombia with her character Gladys from @caliclown gave a green card to those who give good waste management. Red card to those who don’t much and a yellow card to those who committed to improve!
We also handed out signage for recycling bins in Aguacate Bay, Sapzurro, and supermarkets in town. We hope that together with #Jacasep, the town’s cleaning company, these habits can be strengthened and people become aware of the future of the next generations!

This third recycling station was installed at the beginning of the path of a very magical place called Coquerita, leaving the beach of Capurganá. To get to this magical place, you have to walk 1 hour. It is one of the most beautiful walks you will ever do in your life.

Being such a secluded place, it is difficult to evacuate the debris that comes with the tides. However, it’s not impossible, we got together with @youngtravelersco travelers and the coquerita team and left one of the beaches spotless in just 3 hours.

At the end of the day when we thought we should walk back to town carrying sacks, a friendly boat showed up and offered to pick us up and take us back to town with the sacks. We felt that mother earth was thanking us for this work.
The beach was impeccable!

What we found the most on this beach were flip flops, rigid plastic and pet bottles.
The rigid plastic or #mapare, was great to make a mosaic, and the beach was full of divine rafts to make a little house with more time, more hands and more sacks we could create something beautiful in that spot!

In the cleanup 10 formidable participated and collected 131 kgs.
✨PET: 23 kg
✨Pasta: 45kg
✨Tapitas: 6 kgs.
✨Slippers: 57 kg

For the construction of this station 600 kilos of post-consumer plastic were used, it was built by our friends from @ecopazul, and transferred from Cartagena in the BDA ship of our beloved @armadacolombia.

This station has an infographic that teaches us step by step how to make compost in remote, coastal, paradisiacal, and ecosystemically rich places in Colombia, in order to reduce the generation of methane gas in landfills. This gas is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so returning organic waste to the land through composting is an excellent alternative to avoid the harmful effects of these gases in the environment.

We thank @cocacolaco and #fundacióncocacola for supporting these initiatives that help us promote care for the environment 🌍 As well as @cocomanorte 🥥

In this Limpiaventura, we had the great honor of sharing our knowledge of Permaculture with the members of the infantry of the Tierra Bomba base.

They were with us in the titanic task of removing more than 17 tons of glass from the territory and with whom we began the adequacies of the future Permaculture center in the holistic hotel @Namastebeachclub.

The marines of Tierra Bomba @arc_fuerzanavaldelcaribe , learned about the recycling system, the 3 steps of the tourist, the 3 steps of the community, composting, and the technique of lasagna Gardening or vegetable garden lasagna. A way to do organic agriculture, using different layers of organic matter such as cardboard, sticks, straw, and soil to optimize the decomposition process.

We also created a compost bin, and these same methods will soon be replicated at the base of the island.

During that week the artist Maria Antonia Ruiz @mariantoniart from the island of San Andres, created a beautiful parrot fish with 1956 colorful bottle caps, to remind the inhabitants and visitors of Punta arena, the importance of taking care of marine species.

Do you know why this fish is called this way?
It has a curious dentition, it is like a compact block that serves to gnaw incessantly the reefs of its habitat. This structure resembles the beak of a parrot, which is why it is known by this name.

For the weekend of love and friendship, Ecopazifico and its allies @amigosdelmar @fundacion_bahía and @namastebeachclub, joined together to celebrate the international day of coastal regions, with a beach cleanup, in honor of the new recycling station installed in the territory.

In this cleanup we collected :
-Glass 71 kg
-PET 32 kg
-Rigid Plastic 5 kg
-Bottle caps 6 kg
-Ordinary 103 kg
-Aluminum 0.50 kg
-Scrap 6 kg

That day we exhibited the parrot fish mural made by our guest artist María Antonia Ruiz @mariantoniart and celebrated the rest of the day with yoga activities, and human mandalas at @namastebeachclub.

All these activities were done with the objective of inaugurating our recycling station #3 installed in the community of #puntaarena , which is becoming more and more beautiful. This station was manufactured by our friends from the plastic wood factory @ecoazulco with 600 kilos of recycled plastic wood.

In it both inhabitants and visitors will be able to dispose
these 4 recyclable materials:

-Plastic
-Glass
-Metal
-Icopor

The #guardaplayas of the environmental guard of Punta Arena, make sure that these 4 stations are kept clean, and the material is delivered to the association of recyclers of the community: Asocomangle.

The infographic of this station reminds us of 3 fundamental steps that we can follow to get used to live in a clean community:

Separate waste in each
(recyclables, organic, sanitary)

Do not burn or bury waste in marshes, beaches or on trails.

Keeping the surroundings of each area clean at all times.

We trust the community.
We trust the tourists.
We trust in humanity.

As always we are immensely grateful to the @armadacolombia for being part of our project and contributing each time to the environmental education of the remote and coastal territories of Colombia.
Capurganá already has its second recycling station!

Capurganá is a territory of approximately 5000 inhabitants, and its community protects and preserves the ecosystem, however, there are great challenges that prevent good waste management in the territory.

In this opportunity, we were in the territory socializing the 3 steps to live in a clean community.

1. Separate waste at home:

-Recyclables

-Organic

-Sanitary

2. Do not burn or bury waste in the forests.

3. Keep the surroundings of the house clean at all times.

We shared with a great artist known as Niño Dios, he created a mola with 625 recycled lids and we were strengthening the practice of making eco-bricks in the territories of Bahía Aguacate and Sapzurro because these even more remote communities have no choice but to burn their waste.

To avoid these burnings, we recommend tourists and inhabitants to make eco-bricks with light plastic, icopor and tetrapack.

We recommend separating the materials that do not fit in the ecoladrillo into sacks and storing them for later collection. In addition, compost organic waste and burn only the sanitary waste from the toilets on each person’s property.

We present these recommendations as more viable habits so that the negative impact is not so strong on the environment, while the governmental entities present the pertinent solutions to the situation.

In our journey, we visited Bahía Aguacate, a neighboring community of the Capurganá territory.

There are only 4 hotels, approximately 50 residents. It is a paradisiacal bay, with turquoise waters, blowhole, and from the beach, you can hear the scarecrow monkeys from the mountain. This community has no recycling system, and many residents have no choice but to burn their waste.

To inaugurate recycling station #2 installed in the territory of Capurganá, the Ecopazifico team joined the community of Bahía Aguacate, where our friends from @salvando.mares, our new allies in the Atlantic, were also present.

Together, we collected almost 200 kilos of #plastic, flip flops, #icopor, and some #glass and #cans. Every plastic fragment we collect is one less animal at risk of dying.

Please when visiting this and any coastal community in Colombia, remember to follow the 3 steps of the ideal tourist:

1. Bring reusable utensils.

2. Help clean the beach.

3. Return home with your waste.

You can find this new station on the way to “Cielo” a path that crosses the neighborhood “15 de mayo” It was manufactured with 600 kilos of post-consumer polypropylene by our friends from the plastic wood factory, @ecoazulco in Cartagena, and was transferred to the territory by our dear @armadacolombia.

If tourists follow in their footsteps and the community as well, we can get used to living with clean habits in our environment.

We hope that all the inhabitants of the neighborhood 15 de mayo and the walkers who are heading towards El cielo separate correctly :

-Plastic

-Glass

-Metal

-Cardboard

In Capurganá, Jacasep, the cleaning company, collects the cardboard and sells it in the city of Turbo. However, they still have no one to buy their glass.

If you know of companies that want to buy glass from the community of Capurganá, let us know!

Plastic and scrap metal continue to be the easiest materials to recycle in Colombia, but we can’t forget about glass, icopor, and flip-flops that abound in Colombia’s coastal territories.

We thank #Fundacioncocacacola and @cocacolacol for supporting this project.

This was our week of permaculture and environmental education for the inauguration of recycling station #4 in Ladrilleros-Media Playa, in front of our friends from @hostelcasaazul.

Our Formidables from @caliclown were on the beaches of Juanchaco, ladrilleros and la barra, collecting Mapare, inviting tourists to enjoy paradise with consciousness, and reminding the community 3 fundamental steps to live in a clean community.

1. Separate waste at home.

Recycables

Organic

Sanitary

2. Do not burn or bury waste on the beaches.

3. Keep the area around the house clean at all times.

The environmental committee of Ladrilleros also joined this day and cleaned the streets and trails of the community.

During this day 198 kilos of debris were collected.

Our #4 station in Ladrilleros was made with 600 kilos of post-consumer polypropylene by our friends from the plastic wood factory #ELTREBOL. This station invites the population to deposit in a sorted way:

– Plastic – Glass – Metal – Icopor

Although cardboard is a recyclable material, it gets very wet in this part of the country, so we prefer to ask the community to compost it.

Even though polystyrene is not commercial in this part of the country, it is still abundant on these beaches, and we are collecting it to prevent it from leaching into the ecosystems.

The recycling stations are fundamental tools so that in this type of remote and coastal communities of Colombia, we can have places for the proper disposal of recyclable materials.

During the socialization and environmental education process, the community was asked to follow 3 steps to mitigate plastic pollution on beaches, trails, and marshes.

Thanks to our #Guardaplayas, and our alliance with the @guadia_ambiental_colombia, Asocomangle, and @fundacion_bahia the proposal was very well accepted by the community.

These steps are:

Separate waste at home.

Do not burn or bury waste.

Keep the surroundings of the house clean at all times.

During this week of Permaculture, awareness, socialization and environmental education, we also created a mural of #Mapare collected in beach clean-ups together with our @amigosdelmar @marion.ve

We celebrate our recycling station #2 in the beautiful community of punta arena, with a beach clean up, where 21 volunteers participated and collected:

-Ordinary: 28.61 Kg

-Glass: 8.16 Kg

-Profitable: 14.86 kg

This clean-up was carried out from the new Mapare mural in the community, passing through the recycling stations 2 and 1 and ending at the @NamasteBeachClub hotel facilities where we carry out constant beach cleaning and environmental education work in the community.

People passing around the place will already have a station available to deposit plastic, glass, metal, and plastic wrap in an orderly manner, as both the #guardaplayas, @veoliacartagena, and #Asocomangle, make sure to collect, weigh, the materials that are deposited here and also keep the stations clean.

Despite the fact that Colombia is in this “Parondemia” (Strike and Pandemic)

The Formidables 💪 team of Ecopazifico managed to finish the installation of recycling station #9 of the Ecological trail: “Ruta del Mapare”.

During this visit, we managed to establish a maintenance and cleaning program of the recycling stations together with the environmental committee of the community council of Ladrilleros.

The members of this committee love their community and want to see it clean and with a strong and coherent recycling culture. It is a pleasure to be able to offer these remote communities in Colombia educational tools that are intended to help mitigate plastic pollution in the oceans.

To inaugurate this new station, our Formidables team did a cleanup in the mangroves of Ladrilleros, together with our friend Javier, from the Wounaan community.

Did you know that this ecosystem can capture up to 5 times more carbon than other tropical forests?

Its soils are highly effective carbon sinks. It is for this reason that they are important lungs of the planet. Sadly 🥺 when the tide rises in these natural pools all kinds of waste accumulates, which if not collected, deteriorate this fragile ecosystem. 💔

Our Formidables removed 23 kilos of plastic from the mangrove! We are very happy to be able to continue strengthening the recycling culture in this territory.

This beautiful station was manufactured by our friends from the plastic wood factory #ELTREBOL in the city of Cali and moved by our friends from Juanchaco to the territory. Thanks to it, a ton of post-consumer plastic stopped reaching the water sources of our region.

When you pass through Villa Paz, look for the station and visit the Wounaan community, where you will find beautiful, unique, and exclusive handmade crafts. Our station pays homage to this indigenous community, their ancestral knowledge, and culture, informing tourists and locals about it.

Thank you #FundacionCocaCola and @CocaColaCol for joining Ecopazifico!

Infinite thanks to the Wounaan community of Ladrilleros for their hospitality, love, and friendship. We also thank the community council and environmental committee of Ladrilleros and the entire hotel trade of the territory for valuing the importance of this project in the territory, our Formidables team, and all the neighbors of the recycling stations for taking care of them and valuing them.

This was our adventure in Capurganá!

This dream began with our dear friend @kuku_sub from @ikariadivinghostel and our meeting at @karenspizzaoficial , when we began to visualize the recycling stations in Acandí, and this 2021, this dream has manifested thanks to the support of @cocacacolacol #FundacionCocaCola .

EcoPazifico arrived at a very opportune moment in the community of Capurganá! The APRESERVAR hotel guild has been working for several years on this type of space for the proper disposal of waste in the area, the @plasticaware_colombia foundation had started an environmental education program with young people in the territory, and JACASEP, the community council’s sanitation company, was already in the process of closing the open dump and opening a sanitary landfill with the full force of the law.

The Capurganá community council is well aware that the best waste is that which is not generated, and that garbage is only garbage when it is not recycled. However, the challenges of good waste management are very similar to those of the other coastal territories of Colombia we know.

During the month of April, we were socializing the arrival of the new recycling stations in the community, and during the permaculture week, we made a beautiful mural with MAPARE, in which children from 0 to 100 years old participated. It was directed by the Great-Goddess ALEJANDRA GUTIÉRREZ and our friend and local artist NIÑO DIOS. As always we are infinitely grateful to all the people who supported our initiative and especially to #FundacionCocaCola and @cocacacolacol for contributing to the cleanliness of the beaches of our beautiful Colombia.

During the week of installation, and creation of the Mapare Mural, the Ecopazifico team, and the youth of the educational program of @plasticaware_colombia we visited the beaches between “Plan Parejo” and “Bahía Aguacate” to leave them cleaner and according to the majestic landscape of that beautiful paradise!

We collected 516 kilos in two days in only 2 kilometers.

A part of the collected material was used in the creation of the mural that @alejandragutierrez463 created and the other part went to the JACASEP collection center, where “Chucho” the town recycler, shreds or packs it, to send it to the interior of the country, but hopefully soon these Recyclable materials can be transformed and marketed in the same community.

The participants won as a prize, bamboo toothbrushes, sent to us by our friends from @almarsoluciones to strengthen these educational programs in the coastal communities of Colombia! As in all of Colombia’s coastal communities, this is quite a challenge. However, we are very happy to be able to do our bit in this beautiful paradise.

his beautiful station was built in the city of Cartagena by our friends from the plastic wood factory, @ecoazulco, and moved to Capurganá by our National Army of Colombia that has supported us so much in this type of activity.

The infographic of this station, created by our wonderful Bibiana Gonzáles Rocha, invites tourism to follow

3 simple steps to reduce plastic pollution in this territory and in any corner of the planet.

1. Use reusable utensils such as thermos, cups, bags, straws, etc…

2. Help clean up the beach.

3. Return home with your waste and recycle it!

Thanks to #FundacionCocaCola for supporting these important initiatives for our planet right now. @cocacolacol 👊

How to Build a raised bed garden!

During our second round of Permaculture action week, we looked to strengthen the recycling system that we have been co-creating with the communities of the majestic territory of @parquescolombia URAMBA BAHIA MALAGA.

During this week, our team of environmental education continued to socialize the new recycling stations that we are being installed in the community of Ladrilleros and soon, in La Barra.

These socialization are really important, because if the people in the community are not informed about this new recycling system in the territory, it would be useless to install these beautiful structures.

Our project is mainly dedicated to children and young people so, we wanted to remind the new generation the ancestral way of growing food in the Pacific region, through the creation of “azoteas”, which means a vegetable garden, that is raised to sow herbs and vegetables.

In the territory, we have learned that in ecosystems rich like these. Where there is abundance, biodiversity, rains, or drought, growing food can be a challenge.

For this reason, we have designed an easy and simple structure to build, which protects the animals crops, and also the jungle trees. Because our main proposal it is to build with logs that reach the beaches with the tides.

Our formidable team being from the territory, know in depth the dynamics of these communities and thanks to this. We have always managed to create spaces where we can transmit this valuable information that it is always warmly received by people.

In this week, we joined with the environmental Ladrilleros committee, people helped to cleanup of the community and the beach. The Ecopazifico team and volunteers went to the beach, where tons of micro plastics, and styrofoam, which was almost impossible to collect, as these are mixed with the logs, sticks, and leaves that also it is arrive with the tides to these beautiful beaches.

Our team thanks the Ladrilleros environmental committee for their efforts to beautify the community, since they understand that the planet belongs to everyone!

We were able to collect:

8 sacks of PET bottles.

6 sacks of glass.

3 sacks of flip flops.

1 sack of caps.

The dream of seeing recycling stations throughout Juanchaco, Ladrilleros, and La Barra, it is manifesting itself, and we could not be more proud of this!

Thanks to #FundacionCocacola we were able to install this beautiful recycling station in the Ladrilleros Community.

In this season, we learn to make azorras , that it is raised gardens, typical traditions of the Colombian Pacific region. This is important to grow herbs and vegetables protecting crops from excess sun, water, and, animals.

Infinite thanks to #FundacionCocacola @Cocacolacol for supporting our initiative and helping us keep the beaches of our Pacific clean.

Always grateful to the Community Juanchaco & Ladrilleros, and La Barra council for believing in a better planet for future generations of their communities; #ASOTUR; @Fundancestral #ECOURAMBA.
